Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC)
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose (HEC)
Hydroxyethyl Cellulose is a water-soluble polymer derived from natural cellulose that is widely used in cosmetic products as a thickening and gelling agent. It enhances the texture of products, making them feel smooth and luxurious. In skincare formulations like cleansers, shampoos, and serums, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose helps to maintain product stability, improve spreadability, and provide a silky finish. It is gentle on the skin and provides long-lasting hydration.

How to Use
How to Use
1. Thickening Agent
HEC is commonly used to increase the viscosity of liquid formulations, making products like lotions, creams, shampoos, and body washes thicker and more spreadable.
How to Use:
- Concentration: Use 0.5%–2% HEC for mild thickening. For thicker products, you can increase the concentration up to 5%.
- Incorporation: Slowly disperse HEC into the water phase of the formulation. Stir continuously to prevent clumping. For optimal dispersion, use a high-shear mixer or an immersion blender.
2. Gelling Agent
HEC is also used to create gel-like textures in products such as facial masks, hair gels, and body gels.
How to Use:
- Concentration: For gel formulations, use 1%–3% HEC, depending on the desired consistency.
- Incorporation: Add HEC slowly to the water phase and mix until the gel reaches the desired texture. Allow the mixture to sit for a few hours to achieve full gel formation.
3. Suspension Agent
HEC can be used to suspend solid particles in liquid formulations, such as exfoliating scrubs or shampoos with active ingredients that need to stay evenly distributed.
How to Use:
- Concentration: Use 0.5%–1.5% HEC to suspend particles effectively.
- Incorporation: Slowly add HEC to the water phase while stirring. Once dissolved, it will help keep solid particles evenly distributed throughout the liquid.
4. Stabilizer in Emulsions
HEC helps stabilize emulsions, preventing separation in formulations that combine oil and water, such as creams, lotions, and moisturizers.
How to Use:
- Concentration: Use 0.5%–2% HEC to stabilize emulsions.
- Incorporation: Mix HEC into the water phase before combining with the oil phase. Stir well to ensure an even distribution and prevent phase separation.
