How to Use
Recommended Concentration:
General Usage: Stearic acid is typically used at concentrations of 0.5% to 5% in formulations, though this can vary depending on the desired consistency and effect.
0.5–2%: For mild thickening and softening effects in emulsions, creams, and lotions.
2–5%: For more pronounced thickening or when used as a primary emulsifier in products like body butters and balms.
5%+: Can be used in formulations that require a firm, solid texture, such as in solid deodorants or bars.
Solubility:
Stearic acid is oil-soluble and should be incorporated into the oil phase of an emulsified product (cream, lotion, or balm). It is not soluble in water and will need to be heated to fully blend into oil-based formulations.
Temperature Sensitivity:
Stearic acid has a melting point of 69–70°C (156–158°F). For proper incorporation, it must be heated to this temperature to ensure it melts and blends evenly into the oil phase.
It is often used in emulsified formulations, where the oil phase is heated to around 70°C before combining with the water phase.
Compatibility:
With Emulsifiers: Stearic acid works well with other emulsifiers such as Cetearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, and Polysorbates to stabilize emulsions.
With Oils: It is compatible with a variety of oils, including jojoba oil, coconut oil, and shea butter, and can be used to modify the consistency and texture of these oils in a formulation.
With Actives: Stearic acid is stable and does not interfere with most active ingredients, such as vitamins, essential oils, and herbal extracts.
Applications:
Creams and Lotions: Used to thicken and stabilize emulsions, giving the product a smooth, creamy texture and helping to bind the oil and water phases.
Body Butters and Balms: Contributes to the solid or semi-solid consistency of body butters, lip balms, and other solid cosmetic products.
Shampoo Bars and Solid Cleansers: Adds structure and firmness to solid formulations like shampoo bars and soap bars.
Cosmetics: Used in products like foundations, primers, and makeup removers to improve texture, stability, and spreadability.
